Pune FC goalkeeper Amrinder Singh and midfielder Arata Izumi have been named in the 20-member Indian squad for the twin-international friendlies against Palestine scheduled at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal on 6th and 9th October 2014.
Medio Arata, whose last appearance for India came in the SAFF Championship held in Nepal in September 2013, makes a comeback in the team after almost a year. Furthermore, the match will carry special significance for Arata for two unique reasons.
To begin with, the Japanese-born-India-international made his historic national team debut against Palestine in a friendly at Kochi earlier in February 2013. Moreover, it was in November last year when an injury caused Arata to pull out of the friendly games in Siliguri, the venue for the upcoming matches, and so the midfielder will be hoping for better fortunes this time around.
While Arata makes a comeback into the national squad after almost a year, for goalkeeper Amrinder the selection is only his second ever at the senior level.
Amrinder was earlier called up by Koevermans for the international friendly against Bangladesh in February in Goa. Though the young shot stopper remained an unused substitute in that game, he is now the first choice custodian for the India U-23 team currently in Incheon, South Korea for the Asian Games.
The Punjab-born lad also started India’s both practice games against Pakistan earlier in August in Bengaluru and will be hoping to make his mark at the senior level.
Upcoming Pune FC player, striker Thongkhosiem Haokip has been named in the stand-by list.
The 20-member squad announced by national coach Wim Koevermans is as follows:
