PDFA Super-6: Pune FC ‘A’ back on winning track
Pune FC ‘A’ got back to winning ways with a facile 2-0 result against Parshuramians in the Poona District Football Association (PDFA) Super Division Super-6 League.
The result was booster in both confidence and hope after dropping points in their last match (v/s BEG) and garnering one point (v/s Sangam Y.B) earlier.
The first Super-6 win, courtesy striker Thonkhosiem Haokip (26th) and medio Abung Meetei swelled Pune FC ‘A’ points tally to four from three matches and currently occupy fourth place on the league table.
Playing to near-full strength, Pune FC ‘A’ all through their Round-3 game at the Range Hills ground remained a dominant force and restricted the opponents to stray counter attacks.
Attacking at will, Pune FC ‘A’ was repeatedly done-in by a crowded defence. Nine minutes into the game and a combined move from the right had Surjit find Haokip following a throw-in. Haokip, in turn controlled and square passed to Rintea who set-up Nikhil with a first time which ended Nikhil tried cleared by defence.
The first close moment Pune FC created was on the quarter of the hour. Defender Surjit, working on the right, released a long cross to find William inside the box. William controlled well, but could not finish and went over.
Thereafter, Pune FC created a spate of half-chances with James providing William an opportunity, before Nikhil had a gentle chip to Rintea inside the box go abegging owing to the lack of space.
A combined move between Surjit and Nikhil led to the latter cross and find striker Haokip who in-turn provided William a half volley that ended up into the goalkeeper.
A minute later, Shivram shot straight into the ‘keeper.
Having gone agonizingly close, Pune FC ‘A’ finally struck when the hard-working Nikhil working himself clear on the right released a crisp cross for Haokip to head the ball to the goalkeeper’s right.
Switching ends, Pune FC ‘A’ almost doubled the advantage. Off a counter attack, Rinte put Nikhil in the clear on the left. Moving into the box solo, Nikhil released a stiff try with just the ‘keeper upfront from 16-yards but wide.
The rivals who played second fiddle weaved in an attack off a counter attack from the right wing which ended with Pune FC ‘A’ ‘keeper saving a the try from top of the box.
Medio Nikhil, who played a great game proved to be too quick for the rivals and often created chances. In one such moment Nikhil picked up a pass from Rintea and provide James on the far side a chance, which once again was wide.
Pune FC ‘A’ brought in Sujie for William which added sting to their attacks. Sujie, almost immediately, got in the clear after Nikhil sent him clear on the left wing. Sujie’s solo led to an attempt on goal, which the ‘keeper saved but the rebound that came by had Shivram miss from 8-yards.
Nearing the hour, Haokip won Pune FC A’ a free-kick 25-yards out after he was brought down. Sujie’s kick rebounded off the wall to Haokip who released to a waiting Nikhil. Finding space, Nikhil weaved himself past two defenders to have a shy on goal. While the alert goalkeeper blocked Abung, on hand, utalised the chance offered to drill the ball past the ‘keeper’s left.
